I’d have to say the number one misconception of all network marketing opportunities is the comparison made to the illegal “pyramid schemes” that seem to pop their ugly heads up from time to time. A legitimate network marketing opportunity is far from the illegal pyramid schemes. But in order to understand why you need to have the understanding of what is illegal in those businesses.

The pyramidal shape of an organization by itself does not make something illegal. After all, look at most major organizations and you will find a pyramid structure. Let’s take a standard US corporation.
You start with the CEO. Next you have the board of directors. Then you have management. Then you have employees. If you stacked all these from top to bottom you have a pyramid.

Next, look at most public school districts. You have the Superintendent, next the principals and then the teachers and then the students. Another pyramid. I can go on and on but you get the point. A pyramid structure is not what makes “pyramid schemes” illegal.

Most network marketing companies have different levels of consultants. Every new consultant has been introduced to the business by someone else. The levels can go very, very deep and thus you have a pyramid. But what seperates legitimate network marketing from a “pyramid scheme”, is the ability for any consultant at a lower level to surpass the earnings of someone higher up in the pyramid. Also, there must be a service or product involved or it is just money passing up through to the top. And without a product or service there is no value. And with no value built into the system it will always crash.

So now that we know the difference between a legit and non-legit structure we need to look at another common misconception.

I speak to many prospects that are fairly new to the network marketing business world. I am often asked how it is possible to find enough people out there to make it work. And I simply let them know that in the next 5 years, 7 million people will be looking to own their own business. Thats a lot of new prospects. There is a whole world of new people entering the marketplace every year that we could not possibly run out of new prospects.

So if Network Marketing isnt a scam then why would you pursue a company with this type of structure? Well there are two main reasons. The first is Residual Income and the second is the ability to work from home .

The main thing you need to remember in forum marketing is that no one on a forum wants to be sold. I find that many new internet marketers enter a new forum and blast all the users with spam like posts. You always need to keep in mind that people go to forums for information or people to people relations. First impressions are lasting impressions. Make yours count.

Here are some important forum guidelines to follow:

#1. Always read the forum rules before making any posts. Most forums follow similar guidelines but it is important for you to read through them anyway. If you fail to follow the rules you could get banned from the forum and you will not impress any long time members. This is the most important rule and could really damage your reputation quickly.

#2. Never advertise in the actual post. Always use your signature file to add links to your sites. A signature file is at the bottom of every post you make. This is the proper way to bring forum members to your other sites and this goes back to rule #1, READ THE FORUM RULES!

#3. Try to add something useful with each and every post. Try not to make a post just for the sake of doing so. Like I said earlier, people come to forums for useful information. It’s never how many posts you make it’s the quality. Build yourself up as an expert in your particular fields of knowledge.

#4. Always place your posts in the proper thread. A thread is a list of posts on a particular subject. If everyone is discussing Pay-Per-Click advertising, dont start talking about Web2.0. A thread is like a discussion so dont break the chain with something that is not relevant.

#5. Try and do a search on a topic before you start a new thread. Often there will already be a thread on the subject you want to comment on or have a question about. Forum managers do not like to see many threads on the same exact topic. You will likely find the answer there already or can join in on that particular thread.

#6. Always try to use proper gramatically correct language when using a forum, especially if it a business forum. High school chat room type posts will not go very far to further your positive reputation. If you are trying to attract other professionals to read your posts, then use professional language and grammar.

These are some simple guidelines to follow when you market on forums. Forum marketing can be a very good way to generate leads for your home based business . You can also learn alot about marketing as well. So keep yourself open-minded when reading in these forums. Learn from others that have more experience than you. I have learned many lessons about online marketing through the forums I frequent.

Lastly, just try to have fun and be yourself. Promote yourself as an expert. Congratulate others on their success and best of all, make some friends along the way.

Residual Income(also referred to as Passive Income) is basically any income derived tommorrow from today’s effort. I will use my current business as a primary example.
